Look at me, writing a blog, I’m both ashamed and excited, so here goes!
Ever since I discovered that cooking is actually both fun and rewarding, as well as sometimes frustrating, I’ve dreamed of combining one passion, social work (also fun, rewarding, and sometimes frustrating), with another, cooking. One way to make this happen is to start up a non-profit business that would be sustained by a marketable product, that product would be food, probably as a catering business. You see, we would focus on hiring people who face challenges in securing employment, specifically populations like the chronically homeless or men and women returning to society from incarceration. We could teach them a real-life job skill, working in a kitchen, that could be applied to any city or town in the country. We would also teach them other skills, like living on a budget or how to fill out an application in weekly workshops. Every “employee” would be paid hourly, would have access to a phone for other employers or agencies, and would have the support of others who have faced similar challenges.
